November 7, 2018

Announcements and Reminders:

This Saturday , November 11, will be Veterans'  Day.

Targets for Today:

I  can read for enjoyment, and participate in discussions about literature.
I can notice and appreciate the choices of words, phrases, and sentences made by an author.
I can consider the setting of a story, and how it affects the story.

Today’s  Agenda:

1. Today, check your composition book for your
Collection  favorite phrases, sentences, words.
Add to it, share with others.
Watch for interesting words, phrases, and sentences.
Examples --
A favorite part:  "Now he could see the Milky Way, see it as he had never seen it before, a glimmering shroud across the arch of the sky" (95).
Another:
"His guardian [Silas] looked almost heartbroken then, and Bod found himself scared, like a child who has woken a sleeping panther" (164).   This reminds me that one of Mowgli's guardians in The Jungle Book was a panther!
A favorite word:  "fetched up"    Meaning: informal to arrive (at) or end up (in)
2.  💀 The Graveyard Book -
Create a map of Bod's graveyard -- on the large sheet of paper provided.
            or
Create an article, "Secrets of the Graveyard Revealed,"  describing the characters --  on a Google document, shared with Ms. Dorsey.

We will watch part of The Jungle Book Movie
Today -- we watched to 15:32.
Favreau, Marks,  and producer Brigham Taylor developed the film's story as a balance between Disney's animated adaptation and Kipling's original works, borrowing elements from both into the film.
and you will
Compare and Contrast -- the novel,The Graveyard Book , with the movie, The Jungle Book.

For your next book, choose one of these two:
Vote:  Buff = Legend,  Pink = Storyteller's Daughter.  Pick one. Write first and last name.

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death.

In a faraway kingdom, a king has been betrayed. Deeply hurt and bitterly angry, he vows never to be deceived again. Unfortunately, the king's plan to protect himself will endanger all of the realm's young women, unless one of them will volunteer to marry the king -- and surrender her life.

To everyone's relief and horror, one young woman steps forward. The daughter of a legendary storyteller, Shahrazad believes it is her destiny to accept this risk and sacrifice herself.

On the night of her wedding to the king, Shahrazad begins to weave a tale. Fascinated, the king lets her live night after night. Just when Shahrazad dares to believe that she has found a way to keep her life -- and an unexpected love -- a treacherous plot will disrupt her plan. Now she can only hope that love is strong enough to save her.
