Announcements and Reminders:

  •  School pictures will be taken on September 8/9 during your math class.

Targets for Today:

Read!

Utah State Core:  Reading Literature Standard 10.

Today’s  Agenda:

1.  Pick up your composition book.

2.  Sit down with a book of your choice, relax, and read.

3.    When directed to,  respond to what you read in your composition book, under "Reading Response Log."   Use the prompt, " I like/dislike (name of a character from your book because. . .   "  Write at least a third page in response.   Date your response: 9-7.

Ms. Dorsey writes:  I am reading The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss.   The main character, and only character in the book so far, is Auri.  She is insane because of strong magic gone wrong (I know that because of other books by Patrick Rothfuss that  I've read),  and she lives in the underground below a city -- in medieval type times. These underground areas have been abandoned by everyone else, so she is left alone there.  Her insanity is actually likable.  The "Silent Things" in the title are actual things -- objects, and she treats them as if they have feelings and wants. She is so earnest and so much wants to do things right, that she will even put herself in danger or discomfort if she feels that would be the right thing to do.

A favorite (and useful) quote:
"You can't touch us," said Bod. "All you can do is scare." page 56

If You Were Absent:

See the agenda above.

Respond to something you are reading, using one of the reader's response journal starters.
Write at least a third page.  Bring it to tape it into your composition book.

Read on your own to catch up with the class on The Graveyard Book.  You could do this during your quiet reading time at the beginning of class next time.
You can also listen to Neil Gaiman read the second chapter at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMpLQCK8CcA
