Announcements and Reminders:
 Cave Time began last week.
  • Cave Time takes place after second period Tuesday-Friday -- from 11:00 to 11:30.
  • In second period you will receive a slip of paper which shows your current grades.
  • If you receive a white slip, that means you have at least one D or F.  You must work on making up that grade by attending that teacher's class.
  • If you receive a colored slip, you may attend an enrichment of your choice.  Watch for posters  in the hall that show what enrichments are available.  Those posters will also let you know whether a teacher is available for remediation.
  • You must select one place to be during Cave Time.  You may not go from class to class.
  • You will turn in your Cave Time slip to the teacher whose activity you select.
  • When you turn in late work during Cave Time, the teacher may not have time to record it until after slips have been printed for the next day, so that D or F will show up on your slip again.  As usual, it is better for you to keep your grades up all along!

There is  a late bus available after school on Tuesday
through Thursday for students who wish to stay after to work
on their grades.  It leaves at 4 pm and drops off students
at the elementary schools nearest their homes.

If you wish to order books from Scholastic, the book orders will be due  by Wednesday, the 30th.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

will be held on

Thursday, September 17

from 3:30 until 8:00.

Targets for Today:
I will spend time reading for enjoyment!
Utah State Core Reading: Literature Standard 10
I will understand the difference between topic and theme.
Utah State Core Reading: Literature Standard 2

I will tie in art with literature.
I will listen and read along as our class reads a shared book.
I will watch the development of possible themes
over the course of the text
Utah State Core Reading: Literature Standard 2
Utah State Core Reading: Literature Standard 10

Today’s  Agenda:

 1.  Individual Reading --
If you are not up with the class to page 114 in The Storyteller's Daughter, catch up during your individual reading time.

If you are caught up, read your choice of books.

Write a brief response in your composition book (Reader Response)

Appointment clock --  We have already used 1:00 and 3:00 and today -- 5:00.

By the way, as I read and stumble over the names, I am shamed when I listen to this!

2. More about Theme:
Watch for any of these themes as we read

The Storyteller's Daughter:

Are you spotting any others?

The ability to see the truth
is not a function of the eyes
but of the heart.

The Little Prince:  "Ce qui est essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
"That which is essential is invisible to the eyes."

"You can't judge a book by its cover."
(One of our students pointed out that especially the boys in our class judged this book by its cover. Hopefully it it is proving better than they expected!)

Another possible theme:
Treachery can hide where it is least
expected, even in the heart of one
you love and trust the most. (pp. 38, 40)

Page 86 "A deed well done should always be rewarded.
Page 87 "Often we do not see and appreciate what we already have."

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall."  ?

"Pride cometh before the fall." or "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."  Proverbs 16:18  ?

3. Reading from The Storyteller's Daughter

Last time we read up to page 114.

Today we will read . . . to page 137.

If You Were Absent:

Read on your own to catch up with the class.
