Today’s  Agenda:

Write a brief response in your composition book (Reader Response)

Appointment clock --  We have already used 1:00 and 3:00 and 5:00 and 7:00, and today --  11:00.

If you have not finished your artwork, finish it and turn it in next time.

New small project:
What about your heart?

Prince Shahrayar had turned his heart to stone.

He did not know if he could trust Shahrazad's heart.

Here are some literary quotes having to do with a stony heart:

from King Henry VI ?

Othello, Act 4, scene i. , lines 182-183 "my heart is turned to
stone; I strike it, and it hurts my hand."

What is in your heart?
What stays in your heart?
What memories, moments, people, animals, objects, places, books, fears, scars, friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers, other people, journeys, secrets, dreams, crushes, relationships, comforts, learning experiences?
What is at the center?  What is at the edges?  What's in your heart?

In your composition book, sketch your own heart map.
Then create a quality copy to be posted in the classroom.
Notice that the placement of items is important -- that which is most important should go in the center.

Your rough draft may look something like this.
The quality of your final draft would be something like this:

The Storyteller's Daughter

This theme seems to keep coming up.

The ability to see the truth
is not a function of the eyes
but of the heart.

The Little Prince:  "Ce qui est essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
"That which is essential is invisible to the eyes."

"You can't judge a book by its cover."
(One of our students pointed out that especially the boys in our class judged this book by its cover. Hopefully it it is proving better than they expected!)

Other possible themes:
Treachery can hide where it is least
expected, even in the heart of one
you love and trust the most. (pp. 38, 40)

Page 86 "A deed well done should always be rewarded.
Page 87 "Often we do not see and appreciate what we already have."
"The bigger they are, the harder they fall."  ?
"Pride cometh before the fall." or "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."  Proverbs 16:18  ?
Added last time:
Worse than failing is to not try at all. pg. 154

3. Reading from The Storyteller's Daughter

Last time we read up to page 179.

Today we will read . . . (We may finish!)
We read to page 192 -- "The days following the great massacre. . . "

Mrs. Jones came in to tell us about the Battle of the Books!

Battle of the Books
