Announcements and Reminders:
                                                                 
There will be no school on Monday, September 7, 2015 because of Labor Day.

     We will begin the Cave Time schedule 
when we come back from Labor Day Weekend.

Get your grades up BEFORE we begin the Cave Time schedule (September 8?). You will want to have a colored slip so you can choose your activities during Cave Time!

                                             
School pictures will be taken today and Friday during your math class.                                                                 




Targets for Today:

I will spend time reading for enjoyment!
        Utah State Core Reading: Literature Standard 10 
   I will understand the difference between topic and theme.
        Utah State Core Reading: Literature Standard 2 

   I will tie in art with literature.
   I will listen and read along as our class reads a shared book.
       I will watch the development of possible themes 
       over the course of the text

     1.  Individual Reading --
         Write a brief response in your composition book (Reader Response)

     Include an answer to this:
          What do you think might be a theme in the book you're reading?


2. More about Theme:
A possible theme found in The Storyteller's Daughter -
     The ability to see the truth 
     is not a function of the eyes 
     but of the heart.

 

The Little Prince:  "Ce qui est essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
"That which is essential is invisible to the eyes."

Another possible theme:

Treachery can hide where it is least 
expected, even in the heart of one 
you love and trust the most. (pp. 38, 40)

1. Reading your own book -- in the media center.

2. Appointments   
  1.  On the very LAST page of your composition book, draw a big clock face with just the numbers -- no hands.   It should fill  a whole page.
  2. Move around the classroom to make "appointments" with other students. 
    • Find one other student and pick a time on the clock face.  
    • Near that number on the clock face, you will write your name on his or her clock and he or she will write his or her name on your clock. 
    • Move on to another student and do the same thing with him or her.   
    • Keep making appointments until all numbers have been used.   For each number on the clock you will have an "appointment"  with  one other student.

3. About theme:   Is it a theme or a topic?

A theme is. . .

A theme will be expressed in a complete sentence.

   READ!

  Think about and write about the history of my reading.

   Receive disclosure document and hall passes.

  Learn about some books we might read as a class.





Today’s  Agenda:
   
     Find your seat on the seating chart. 
     1.  Time to read and/or peruse the classroom library
     2.  Receive disclosure document.  Return the signature sheet by August 26.
           Number composition books, leave them in your assigned folders.

     3.  Write your own reading history. (Write in your composition book or use a sheet of lined binder paper -- with NO spiro-bits.)
    The following questions are just to jumpstart your thinking!
           Did someone read to you before you could read on your own?
           When and how did you learn to read?
           Do you remember the first book you read?
           What else do you remember reading, and how
                 did those things affect you?
